I couldn't agree more. I love the quote "less like a shotgun blast, and more like a rifle shot."

I also find it helpful if the mood of the Bible passages, songs, etc. has unity or a good progression. For example, passages and songs about God's power might be upbeat and joyful or awed and solemn -- or vigorous, exuberant, firm, intense, sober, etc., and I'm distracted if the mood jumps without thought from one to another and back again.
